4 Tops Hill Race

1993

Weather good, no rain, broken sunshine. Carried waterproofs in bumbag, wore walsh boots.

Druimarbin - majority of climb done on road. Hill itself was a tricky bumpy path. No real problems. Followed forest road all way to Cow Hill summit, long slog, tricky forestry descent into Glen Nevis, then followed route along to Youth Hostel. Was lying about 29th position at this point. Was beginning to get tired. Half Ben Nevis - ascent was hard going but managed to hold my place to the top. Picked up two places on early descent but lost one just before Auchintee Farm. Legs starting to turn to jelly. Road to Meall an t-Suidhe was hellish. Tarmac surface pure hell on legs.

Meall an t-Suidhe - nightmare! 1500' ascent of pain. Was starting to catch a few runners before the summit but lost a place on the descent, legs turned solid ... with cramp while crossing the moor at the bottom of the hill. Had to stop. Lost another two places and about four minutes as a result of the cramp. Managed to trot back to the leisure centre to finish without losing anymore places. Annoyed not getting under 30th place after holding on so long, but still a good run for me without being race fit. No serious injuries.
