Falkland Trail Race

Only 3 Westies at this 6 mile race on Saturday: Nige, Chris and me. Despite the cold weather, Dave Calder will be pleased to hear that we all eschewed baselayers, thus avoiding the need for a good hiding from the committee.

My race started exactly to plan, letting Nige and Chris open up an early lead. I was confident this would turn into a bigger lead and that the next time I saw either of them would be Chris taking photos of my struggle down the home straight. I then spent the outward leg of the race swapping places with road runners; I passed them on the hills, they passed me on the flat sections. I made up a couple of places around the loop at the end of the course and managed to reel in another couple of runners on the predominantly downhill journey back to the finish.

I spent the last few hundred metres of the race in a scrap for 48th place with one of the multitude of Fife AC runners. We ended with the same time, but unfortunately with me in 49th! In the midst of this, the final part of my race plan fell into place, as I noticed Chris and camera near the line.

The post-race spread was good, rounding off a very enjoyable couple of hours. Results;

1st Al Hart (HBT) 34:25

13th Nige Scott 37:15

28th Chris Upson 38:46

43rd Julia Henderson (Helensburgh) 41:04

49th Rob McQuater 41:34

    Finely work plan Rob!My own plan was to hare off as fast as possible and then steadily lose places for the rest of the race. Displaced Cheshire Hill Racer Vince Booth almost stole my thunder by haring off like even more of a lunatic. I hauled him after 50 metres and proceeded to lead the field for the next 100 metres or so, until the first slight incline at which point the mass ranks drifted past, perfectly according to plan.I then carefully dropped places until the halfway point where Vince finally overtook me. I held position after the steep midway descent and killer climb back to the main forest trail, but then dropped a load more places on the fast-ish run back, not least getting passed by an Under-15 Fife runner.Unfortunately the photos turned out rubbish due to poor light.Full Results
