Urban Orienteering - 13 Dec

And now (as they say) for something completely different...

The plan was for a moderately new format of a score orienteering event around the streets of Milngavie, but the heavy rain conspired to add a new dimension... The event became a score biathlon with many check points requiring the runners to negotiate deep water. One control was overwhelmed by the Allender River, while the route over to Baldernock had 3 short but deep swimable sections.

A small select bunch of connoisseurs turned up and set off to visit as many of the 21 controls that they could in the allotted hours. Competition was fierce as most people were seduced by the big easterly controls up in the wilds of Baldernock, and no-one was tempted by the dense pack of worthy but boring controls to the west.

However the deciding factor appeared to be the length of time the competitor could keep the map and control sheet intact before they dissolved in the rain.

So the results of this battle against the elements is as follows

First Man - Trevor

First Pair - Gillian and Helen

First Woman - Pat

First Man (not called Trevor) - Rob

First Veteran Man - Ian

The evening was rounded of with soup, pizza and some wonderful Florentines, so thanks to Isobel and Charlie for the help in running the event.

The weather was worthy of a KIMM, but registration had central heating! I was just enjoying that luxury when I got given my control sheet, Charlie and Fiona decided it was time I started and I had to go out in the rain. The next hour flew by in a collection of wrong turns, scribbled control answers, dark country lanes and river crossings (on the roads!). So much more fun than a regular road run.

Then it was hot showers, good food and a plethora of prizes. All in all, an excellent night and one that I think should become an annual fixture. Thanks to John and Fiona for organising such a good event and being such generous hosts. Just a shame more people couldn't make it along.

I've added a couple of photos of the prizegiving.
