Dunbartonshire Cross Country Championships 2006

Mud, Glorious Mud

This was a real cross country course, held in perfect mud out at Kirkintilloch, exemplified by the fact that the winning time for the men's 5.8 mile course was almost 40 minutes. As Drew said, it was the muddiest cross country he has ever run. Chris was first Westie male home, ahead of Don who scalped Steffen. They were followed by Hamilton, Jason, Grimorr, Archie and Drew, all of whom , it has to be said, looked as if they were enjoying themselves tremendously!

In the women's 3. 8mile race, Jane had a great run, finishing 6th and 3rd vet. Muffy also ran well to finish 11th. It's a pity Christine didn't make it as we would almost certainly have picked up a women's team prize, but hey, so what...everyone was having such fun that prizes and points were the last thing on folks minds!

Indeed, certainly a complete mudbath. So squelchy it was almost unrunnable.Spent hours trying to remove all the mud last night.Full results and a few photos

Had a bit of a battle with the 2 Helensburgh runners Damien Theaker and Paul Thompson on the final lap, but couldn't generate enough pace in the quagmire to stay with them.

Definately agree with Drew. What a mud fest!!. I say mud, but at certain points on the course, there was obviously some cow poo mixed in the broth. We may all have an E Coli infection next week or mad cow disease next year. Back to the race - what a great battle with Steff. Full credit to him, 3 laps of pushing him through the mire and he never backed down - every time I passed him, he kept passing me back, like a boxer who would not stay on the canvas. Only managed to make a break stick with 1/4 mile to go. Trying to sprint in the deep mud at the finish was nigh on impossible - thats my excuse for that rediculous photo of me on Chris's site. Looking forward to a nice clean road race in E K next week.

I'm convinced Dave carried out an inspection of the course undercover of darkness, deemed it not muddy enough and arranged for a mud making machine to be trundled round the course before the start.

    That mud was sh*te!

    Unreal.

The guy in front of me did a ski sunday impersonation at one point: he slipped whilst contouring around a flag pole, grabbed hold of the pole which then broke in two. He and remainder of pole skidded on down the field where he planted it anew, gained purchase and kept on running. Probably added an extra 10 yds to the course!

I concur with all other writers. The underfoot conditions were so bad is was almost more fun than a race. Had it not been for Don I would not have been able to push so hard and would have probably ended up a few minutes slower. I also agree with Muffy that there were loveley little sections when the mud contained at leas 50% manure. It certainly smelled like it in the shower at home when I tried to scrape it all off. Glad I went. EK will be a different proposition!

This was the muddiest race I have ran since a xc in Prudhoe in around 1980 when the farmer had ploughed the field that week and then it rained for five straight days to creat a Somme like quagmire. However even that lacked the cow produce of this race, by which I don't mean there were sausages lying around, but as has been mentioned above, that the cows had produced...well I think you all know what the cows produced! Anyway it was tough race and really hard to get going. Two steps forward lead to one sideways most times and we all did the Don Shuffle at some point. I managed to hang on to Jane for her two laps and then for some reason she stopped? How unfair! Dave when are DAAA adressing this sexcist issue?! After that I couldn't get over to Hamilton who looked very strong. Anyway Chris' photos seem to suggest I was enjoying myself so musn't grumble. I assume the conditions in Oz over the next month will be better. Hope I can find a race or I'll score no league point at all!

KIRKY: THROUGH GLAUR TO GLORY I've been waiting for my chance to make a fine alliterative headline - that feels better!Aye, they should bottle that mud at the top gate - half coo-keech and half Kirky clart. Maybe Westy wummin could use it for facial mud-packs? very rejuvenating for sure. I'll take Drew's word for it that it was muddier than the vets at Cupar! the course was surely slippier, but the mud didn't stick nor "suck" too badly. No use picking your footing for sure. I enjoyed the first 2 Unisex laps and had a jolly tussle with a wee Clydesdale filly till she dropped me (poor Grim). However, I claim fellow-Cally Uni inmate Archie's scalp - a first, I think - but would settle for the Groucho 'tache as alternative. By the way, the current "PB" magazine has an excellent article about X-country, for any Westy afficionados. Also features on Scotland's last(?) 2 world-class track athletes ie Glen Stewart and Ian Mackie. I watched "Touching the Void" on Channel 4 after the race, to put the heroics in perspective. Wow, what supermen, I thought - then I noticed they were wearing head torches. WIMPS!! I didni see any head-torches at Kirky - did you? Another film about sporting heroics I'd recommend is "Flying Scotsman", about Graeme Obree. Apart from his spelling his name the better way, it's a fine portrayal of one of those great maverick outsiders Scotland produces every now and then!
