No Woman, No Cry Sing Westies Old Stagers On Speed!
8 Westies men ventured round the new 2 lap trail for the GU Road Race. In perfect Autumn conditions, Captain Chris bravely led the Westies octet through the vet school, along Temple Road, down through Dawsholm and back along Maryhill Road (twice) despite a cold which made him sound as if he had his inov8's stuffed up each nostril! Dave, sensing a scalp in the offing, tried to pull Chris in on the second lap to no avail, but instead enjoyed his tussle with the legendary Bryan Burnett of B***********., the latter gaining the edge over the last 200 metres.Hamilton was next in followed by Archie, continuing his consistent return to form of the past few weeks. Next in was the Grim Teacosy, then Ian, then Drew continuing his unbroken sequence of Uni Road Races since the Battle of Culloden, and finally Andy....but where were the women? Saving themselves for the Grudge Match the following day....NOT( only Elsie and Jane ventured out for that). Only Isabel had an excuse in that she was timekeeping. Ah well, it was good to see the old warrior Westies unafraid of a fast 5-mile sprint, unlike the younger whippersnappers! It's still a great race, despite the absence of the legendary Cleveden Hill.

What ! How can they call it a Uni road race without Cleveden Hill, which was the crux of the route. Surely individual PB times will tumble now (apart from mine obviously). I think Dave is being too kind re the conditions, certainly not perfect Autumn, but more like dreary Winter - well done to all who braved them.

Grim as ever said...
Aye Chaz, the Cleveden Hill was much missed (not!) although its position on the previous race route wasn't as critical as its former "Heartbreak Hill" status 1 mile from Westerlands club-house us old-timers (like the majority of Westy race finishers! even "young" Dave Calder will fondly recall the old course) were more used to. Anyway, the climb up from the Kelvin to Maryhill Road is a new toughie to drain the old muscles!

Hey auld grim yin, I remember the previous previous race route fine. Ran my first Uni RR as a sprightly 15 year old in 1985, and also the following year but the trauma of "Heartbreak Hill" as you call it, meant that I didn't return for another 11 years. The killer then was that you had the long drag up from the Kelvin, past the old Incinerator, not much respite as everyone seemed to hammer down over the railway line and canal, to then be faced with the steel toe-cap to the dangly bits that was Cleveden hill. And only then to have to hang on for the last mile before the mad sprint around Westerlands track and keeping the involuntary retching to a minimum in front of the time-keepers, in the pretence that one was a half decent athlete, all the while Nat Muir had finished by over 7 minutes. Aye, those were the days!

Unfortunately I didn't exercise my famed sprint finish to beat the Bellaboy, probably because I was basking in the glory of finishing within spitting distance of Chris!
