AlanScally 2006

A select group of non Ossianisers (?) met for the Alan Scally Road Relays this weekend. We had a full team and 3/4 mixed team, unfortunately the promised wimins team didn't materialise. Alan A. and his wife Gilian, Ian, Archie, Don, Drew and I blasted round the usual course which never lets you ease off realy. Ofcourse the usual roadies were flying past us, and with this being the Scots Uni Relay Champs as well we were definitely in a plodding minority. The weather was cool with a slight breeze, but perfect for running.

I was very pleased with around 32.5 min as this is over 2 minutes faster then last year (I am going to enjoy this winter I think) which is especally pleasing as I am not doing any speed work at the moment, just steady runs and races, so getting close to 6.5 min miles was a real surprise. The results aren't out as I type so I dont know any one elses times, but I think Alan was around 30sec ahead of me, and Don was making excuses like being up till 4 the night before!

Well done everyone who turned out for not the prettiest race we run, but the tea and butty afterwards (and a Blue Riband! How 1970s) makes this a fast paced bargain (except for the eating disordered).

This race brought all the mixed memories of club road racing when I was press-ganged into running for Westerlands in the mid 1980’s. But then it seemed a lot easier, being two decades younger. Thankfully I saw the light and missed it for about 14 years due to the joys of Loch Ossian. Having said that, Saturday’s race was still enjoyable mainly because of the fact that the race route is still unchanged and old Westerlands faces are still present, as well as new ones of course.Archie

Just seen the results, Westies 'A' Jason, Alan, Archie, Drew 44th; 'B' Don, Gillian, Ian (no 4th leg). In time order:

    Don - 30:38Alan - 32:17Jason - 32:22Archie - 33:04Gillian - 35:52Ian - 36:49Drew - 37:47

The club handicapping worked well on the first two legs, with Don leaving me standing and Alan passing Gillian, but this didn't quite continue. Also worth noting Jethro ran the Shettlestone 'A' fastest leg to bring them in 2nd! Who said hill runners can't do road.
