Manor Water 2006

A record field of 90+ for the Manor Water race last Saturday. The weather was bright, with plenty of sunshine making it feel almost like summer. After a slightly longer journey time than anticipated my race prep was pretty rushed, not helped by having to go on a begging mission for safety pins to attach my number.

We set off just after 1pm, trying to avoid the worst of the mud over the first half mile of easier slopes. Then it was over the stile and the harder climbing started. I made steady progress up to the Scrape, swapping places a couple of times with Hamilton on the way. The leader flew past us when I was only about a third of the way up the final climb and I must have turned in around 50th place.

The descent was really enjoyable, with great views, lots of short heather and a few people to chase. I struggled on the climb back around Whitelaw Hill, but still managed to make up a few places before the finish.

Plenty of people seemed to stick around afterwards to enjoy the refreshments, discuss the race and watch the sheepdog trials in the afternoon sun. It all added up to an excellent afternoon.

Westies results;

1 Brian Marshall (HELP) 68:14

12 Chris Upson 77:11
