West District Relays, 15th October 2006
Jane Leaps into League Lead as Westies Men are in Sixes and Sevens!
There was a good turnout of Westies for the West District Relays at Irvine Beach Park. In the women's race, a late call-off by Gillian meant that there wasn't a full women's team, but it didn't stop our team finishing 16th. Jane sprinted round the trail for the first leg before handing over to Pauline . This gave Jane about 18 minutes to recover before starting again on the third leg, which she managed to run only 14 seconds slower than her earlier stage. It also gave her bonus points for running two races in the one day, thereby catapulting her to the top of the Westies league; the first time ever that that position has been held by a woman!
Having established that the Westies men would be in no position to pick up any of the major honours, the team manager decided to mix up the teams...unbeknown to his fellow Westies. So Don, who thought he was handing over to Chris on leg 2, actually handed over to Rob, whilst Hamilton ended up passing over to Chris. This made for an exciting leg 2, as it was only within the last few hundred metres that Chris managed to overhaul Rob. Any suggestion that the change of teams/numbers was in fact a complete cock-up by the team manager was strenuously denied, of course!
Further confusion reigned at the end of the second stage when Chris finished and neither Jason nor David knew which one should head off. Eventually David ( " I was waiting for someone to tell me to go") hurtled out the gate, en route for the fastest Westies time of the day before handing over to Dave for the glory leg. Meanwhile Jason had rather a good run too, just 2 seconds slower than Hamilton, before handing over to Alan who hurtled round the grass and sand to bring the B, sorry A, team into the finish.
Mention should be made of Drew, who sacrificed a team place ( we had 9 men for 8 places) but didn't have enough time to get dressed up to take the third woman's place. Finding a ginger wig to impersonate Gillian proved an impossible task in such a short time.

It was very confusing at the time, but I realised later that only Don and Hamilton were wearing the correct numbers. Everyone else was sporting the number for the other team. But don't be sad... 2 out of 8 ain't bad !!

Well the first race of the winter league was a clear as the scoring rules so that's only to be expected. DaveC was in charge of both...coincidently!
However this was a swift sprint around quite a nice course, for xc that is! with pleasant parkland, a couple of short sharp banks and descents, and a hard stretch of sand on the beach, while enjoying the sea views. Good weather meant there was plenty of support and I enjoyed my run around, even though I didn't know which team I was running for, A, B, ladies?
Anyway in the end it made for aninteresting run betwen the Westies and I have to say was a good plan by DaveC, to handicap the two teams to race each other more closely. I'd be happy for this to happen more often, with the fastest and slowest runners in one team, as we aren't really going for prizes in these races are we?
Thanks all and well done Jane!

Re Dave's new accidental handicap system, I enjoyed my run with the incentive of trying to stay in front of Chris. Didn't manage it, but it certainly added something. Definitely worth considering again.
Does wearing the wrong team number count as fancy dress?

Yes, the new relay handicap system was a clever idea, even if Dave claims he arranged it by accident.Full Results - if you can make any sense of them, since all the guys apart from Don (Daniel) and Hamilton are listed with the wrong names.

Just to point out that according to the OFFICIAL results I clocked 13:27, which I think was great! Hooray for me (and maybe a flying DavidR).

First inclination that anything was amiss, was Dave's familiar mock Mr.Angry expression saying how dare Ilet him give me the wrong (correct) number to wear.Confused, you will be,and several others too. For.....goodness sake, just get a number and race. Grand day out again, yes well done Jane, what a star.
