McAndrew Relays 2006

Shock Horror as Westies get team selection spot on! Ten brave Westies participated in the traditional race marking the start of the cross country season. Cat ran first stage for the women, her first race since her recent injury. She even managed to smile bravely as she limped downhill towards the finish as fastest Westies woman, handing over to Muffy.Muffy had a good run, the highlight of which was sprinting past Grimorr 100 metres from the finish and handing over to Pauline, who ran the course in a faster time than either Grimorr or Drew.

For the men, Captain Chris ( inevitably) set off on stage 1, just managing toe finish ahead of the first ladies team by dunting City of Glasgow's Lindsay McNeil out the way just on the line. David Riach took over on stage 2, increasing the lead over the first ladies and upstaging Chris by running 7 seconds faster. Steffen held off the CoG ladies on the third stage before handing over to Dave, who almost enjoyed himself on stage 4. For the McAndrew's, this is definitely a first!

We ended up with 3 quarters of a second team; last-minute pleas to Charlie to run leg 4 were in vain as new boy Rob McQuater put in a tidy performance on stage 1. Grimorr took over on stage two looking comfortable, but looked totally flat-footed and spent as he hobbled over the finish line at the end. We never found out what happened as Graeme headed off immediately afterwards to get home in time to see the Scotland-France match. Drew, fresh from completing the hoovering at home before Margaret's return from hospital, was in fine form as he ran stage 3. Just a pity that there wasn't a fourth man out.
