A makeshift irvine team travelled to contest the Urie Loch Hill race on arran on sunday. In temperatures in excess of 33 degrees it was always going to be a hotly contested race, with the understrength irvine team of Begley, Hamilton and Dowell booked at 10-1 to take the covetted trophy. The race started with former Irvine captain, Scott McKendrick, now of Westerlands CCC setting the early pace on the revised tougher 6 mile route. Irvine man Lightfoot Begley tucked in around 6th position on the climb with Dowell mid pack and new hill running captain Ian Hamilton in 15th. The Irvine men held this to the summit and were in with an outside chance of a top 3 team spot. Race leader McKendrick lost the lead at the summit as he stopped breifly to fix his sunglasses and apply additional sunblock in the searing heat but clawed the seconds back in an incredible piece of downhill running to finish over 1 minute clear in a new course record time. Irvine man Begley made up some ground on the descent to come home in a credible 5th place with Dowell only a few places behind. It was left to hill running captain Hamilton now for the team place. The experienced fellsman came home in a sprint finish to record an amazing 16th place and secure the team trophy for the first time. An ecstatic Hamilton added,"When McKendrick left I assumed the captain's armband would be handed over to the next fastest runner, Lightfoot Begley. Imagine my surprise when I received the former captain's band in the post. This spurred me on to that great run and I am over the moon with the result. This must surely secure a first team start for me at the Arran relays next weekend"
