Cort-ma Law

It was beautiful conditions for a hill race... last week. The weather for the 2006 Cort-ma Law hill race was horrible; but that didn't stop 46 runners from competing.

Before the start there was high drama on several counts. If it wasn't the frequent kerb crawling visits from the police it was an official visit from the land owner, asking if we had sought his permission to use his land (and also warning that the burn crossing could be difficult with the amount of recent rain). Luckily the Lomond Mountain Rescue turned out in splendid numbers, which was very reassuring in the bad conditions.

With the marshals in place and the race well underway, Charlie phoned to say that the leader had just passed him at the first style and shouted out, "which way is it?", which didn't boost my confidence much. Luckily no-one got lost; the marshals obviously did a great job in pointing runners in the right direction.

The race was won in a time of 51.16 by Graham Campbell of Highland HR, with Adam Ward of Carnethy first vet in second place. First M50 was David Scott of Ochils and M60 was Ian McManus.

Jo Whitehead of City of Edinburgh maintained her current strong form with a victory in 64.51, followed by Val Houston of Westerlands (both F40). Catriona Miller was third (and first senior female). Helen McPherson of Westerlands was first F50 and Pat McLaughlin also of Westerlands first F60.

Westerlands swept the board when it came to team prizes. the winning teams were:

Men - David Riach, Luke Arnott and Chris Upson

Women - Val Houston, Catriona Miller and Katherine Kirk

The helpers were absolutely fantastic: on low-level we had Margaret, Hamilton, Don and myself (and between us we thankfully made very light work of recording the results, what with Don's binoculars), while the hardy high-level helpers were Charlie, Helen (P), Ian, Fiona and Alan (who all fought the rotten conditions to make sure everyone kept on track). A great big thank-you to all.

And of course, as mentioned before, Lomond Mountain Rescue provided an excellent service, especially when lifting people across the raging burn!

A great team effort all round.

A big thank you to Blair and his merry band of helpers.

Truly awful mid-summer Scottish weather made for a full-on Bog and Burn experience!

And I'm not that old yet! What is it with these young Westies trying to put years (well OK 3 months in my case but years in Dave C's!) on us old Westies.

Anyway, thanks for organising this again Blair. And particular thanks to the marshalls and the Mountain Rescue. I reckon they had the hardest job of the night. Especially the one that had to haul me across the raging burn.

well done everybody - I'm gutted to have missed this and strangely enough (and true) I always dreamed of doing it in absolute pissing down conditions.

I would also like to add to the thanks to Blair, the marshals and the mountin rescue for a great job on a horrid night. Well that was an experience! A hard race and "Bog & Burn" doesn't do it justice. Im not strong enough for this sort of grind yet but loking back on it i suppose there is something fun about it and the conditions certainly made it. I didnt know if i was more worried about getting lost or drowning. Full on winter conditions meant my toes had no feeling for and hour and boy does the inside of my car stink, but thanks to all for a good time.

An epic event....and no midges! Well done marshalls, although I didn't get hoiked across the burn like some competitors. And, I don't understand why Ian and Fiona were able to keep smiling on the Lecket. What were they on?

My 14th running of this race and faster then the last 2 years! - probably because I didn't do the LAMM the weekend before this year. I enjoyed a great race with Simon, Murdo and Graham managing to get back at the first two for the Kilpatricks but just failing to reel Graham in. It was a weirdly enjoyable sort of a race with the wind, rain, bog and burn but ultimately well worth braving the wild weather earlier in the day. Thanks to all who helped out.
