Lamm 17/18.6.06 Assynt

O.K. in 5 seconds-we drove to Inchnadamph,had a great week-end,

friendly people, superbly well organised event, saw nothing at all thro'

the mist, and got totally hammered. Oh,you want more?

Well, last bit-blatant lie of course.

Johannes,Ana,Val(B)&I &Chris ventured up to Assynt to see... well

to see not very much at all,if truth be told. Yes,just the way it goes, after a week of wonderful weather, Dame Nature threw a googly-a

fully foul frontal at us.Mist & low cloud for the week-end,brightening

up for the last few hours.

Preparations began all of a couple of days before the off with John &

Fiona kindly supplying absolute necessities such as stove & proper

Lamm rucksac, & Johannes & Ana supplying me with other light-

weight items.Could not have done it without them, thank you.

Ana & Val had excellent runs & times both days on the D course.

Strangely, can't remember their times?(Sure they will comment)

Johannes & I did the Elite E course. Ohh, been rumbled, dos'nt

exist.

We did the C course. Stats. were:

Day 1 23.6 km 1130 m 8hrs.45

Day 2 20.4 km 1080m 8hrs.42

Johannes did a superb job with the navigating-spot on to the controls,in very challenging conditions.Val & Ana did likewise.

We were wearing a dibber on the wrist to bleep the control box,

only the call of a certain bird, perhaps a snipe, was very similar so

had to resist the urge to go wandering off in search of a bird.

That's bird, not burd to yoouuse using the vernacular.Turn into

I.M. Jolly in a minute and tell you a classic joke. No,best not, never finish these ramblings.

So, this was a leisurely hill-walk with a bit of camping thrown in.

No, did'nt read the script.Well we were politely saying our cheery

hello's creating a wonderful atmosphere, and getting that back in spades, taking photos.-they will be on for you. The occasional look

back said:

"What the hell do you think this is pal-a ruddy picnic?"

Not much of the snarling, spitting brigade then.

The terrain was severe at times, i.e. traversing bolder fields that you had to slow to a crawl to negotiate the very sharp edges of the

rock. Unfortunately, Johannes cut the front of an ankle half-way

thro' the second day. This became far worse as we progressed,

particularly on the downhill sections. When it was cleaned &

dressed at the finish the cut turned out to be a massive gash to the bone! This certainly warranted a helicopter ride home. Perhaps

Westies just do'nt do helicopters. So,back in Glasgow & Ana still

was'nt finished driving-straight off to The Western. Also,Ana had

turned her ankle on the second day, turning round to reply to a

runner saying HELLO. Terrible these runners that do that.Should

be shot. Hope you both have a speedy recovery.

Chris was on the A course & we think he had an excellent race.

Many thank you's.

The organisers for a smoothly run challenging race.

John & Fiona, Johannes & Ana for supplying their kit.

By that point, Ana and Val would have had their tent set up, washed, and dinner cooked. That's not because our navigation had gone wrong, as suspected by the washed and fed, but because we took it nice and easCheckpoint at Loch nan Cuaran

I think it's fair to say that all Westies at the LAMM were heroes, in their own ways:

    * Ana and Val for squeezing into the tiniest tent (while Hamilton and I went for the luxury version that allowed us to build a homophobic rucksack barrier in the middle);* Ana again for doing all the driving despite her sprained ankle;* Chris for actually doing well;* Hamilton for doing the run despite the injury he sustained during the preparation for the LAMM (specifically cutting himself in Cotswolds while shopping for performance underpants).

Navigation wasn't quite as glorious as Hamilton described it, but not too bad.
